Full Diagnostic Laboratory Services At Ocala Family Medical Center

A diagnostic test is any kind of medical test performed to aid in the diagnosis or detection of disease. For example, such a test may be used to confirm that a person is free from disease, or to fully diagnose a disease, including to sub-classify it regarding severity and susceptibility to treatment. A diagnosis may be made by a chemical, microscopic, microbiologic, immunologic, or pathologic study of secretions, discharges, blood, or tissue.

Medical laboratory testing plays a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients. Laboratory tests help determine the presence, extent, or absence of disease and monitor the effectiveness of treatment. An estimated 60 percent to 70 percent of all decisions regarding a patient's diagnosis and treatment, hospital admission and discharge are based on laboratory test results.

Medical laboratory scientists (also referred to as clinical laboratory technologists or medical technologists) and clinical laboratory technicians (also known as medical laboratory technicians) perform most laboratory tests.

Medical laboratory scientists analyze test results and relay them to physicians. They perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic and bacteriological tests, requiring significant analytical and independent judgment. Medical laboratory scientists perform a wide variety of functions. The volume of laboratory tests continues to increase with both population growth and the development of new types of tests.
